A Lott of Bushit about Katrina, Race, and the War on Poverty

For a week or so after Katrina
(Apart from a few racist hacks)
The Bushies said "we'll be less meaner"
And promised to help re-house Blacks.

The Preznit speeched with compassion
As he blasted the White-Black divide
And claimed poverty as his new mission.
Here’s a shock: it would seem that he lied.

The months that have passed since Bush spoke
Were enough to begin Lott’s new mansion
All the rest that Bush said was a joke,
And compassion is now out of fashion.

Judith Miller sends the Gray Lady down

The NY Times, donning their laurels,
Have rebuffed every critical claim
Concerning the lapsing of morals
In their reports on Valerie Plame
(Or the WMD lies, that made Iraq fair game.)

Yet we now know a startling fact.
Keller’s first editorial act,
When he picked up the reins of the rotting Gray Lady
Was to yank Judith out of Iraq.

However, with flair and a flip of her hair
--Reminiscent of newspaperman Blair,
Judy Miller wrote tale after tale
In her chase for the WMD Grail.

Judy’s buddy Bill Safire, a long-time liar
--Like so many Republicans--
Attacked every critic of Judy
For in his view, “despicable sins”

And what strength, to suffer in jail!
For the freedoms we all hold so dear
--That is, until jail, for Judy, grew stale
And her heart pitter-patted with fear.

Then she gave up old Scooter so quick!
Scooter’s losses now outweigh his wins
As Judith, with casual wrist-flick
Flushed his flowery prose on aspens.

Well, the Times is in shit to its shins
--All the holier-than-thou editorials
And no matter now how hard he spins
Keller’s due for some scathing excorials.

preznit bush finds some happy soldiers

when Preznit Bush s'on teevee
I get to feelin sleepee
brainz oozin out, sucked
into the vacuum duck
of mezmerizin doublespeak
of robot talk and freepy beep

capacity to think
dies out in a wink
as troops feed packaged queries
to preznit like eazee cheez

"its a chat, just back and forth"
squeaks Scott MacClellan, puffy dwarf
in charge of vindication
of the staged regurgitation

he gets mad when Preznit's happy
day is queried roughly
"you want the terrorists to win!",
Scott sticks a chin out, toughly

Mission Accomplished: All Fucked Up. Bush puts Rove in Charge of Rebuilding the Gulf

The Clarion-Ledger said Friday it obtained an internal Justice Department e-mail sent out this week to U.S. attorneys that asks: "Has your district defended any cases on behalf of the (U.S.) Army Corps of Engineers against claims brought by environmental groups seeking to block or otherwise impede the Corps work on the levees protecting New Orleans? If so, please describe the case and the outcome of the litigation."

I came down to New Orleans,
looked around and noted,
place ain't worth a hill of beans.
doubt these black folk would've voted
for me anyhow.

but damn! my record sucks so bad
hell, name it, cause I've fucked it up
the Iraq war, Osama free,
thank god there's no real scrutiny.
I mean, give me a job and I'll muck it up
been doin' it since i was a lad
while other boys had to suck it up
and go and fight the Viet Cong
My Dad said Son you stay right here
the Nat'l Guard's where you belong.

Anyhoo, i guess there's not much more
around for me to screw
except for the aftermath.
I tell you what, the place took a bath.
don't even think duct tape'll help
We must rebuild, so all youse people
go to church and hug a steeple
pray the most you ever done
cause now the Bush Gulf War's begun.

It was the real war all along.
That Iraq crap was just a song
the aim was get the Red States free
of people black and red and greens
Them Greenies piss me off so bad
I'm puttin Rove in charge
of rebuilding New Orleans.

Mission accomplished:
tell the army use their total resources
to figure out how to put the blame on
environmentalist whoresons
don't give a damn about houses for the poor
leave em in Texas and Utah
let Delay Gerrymander them right out the door
of the electoral process, HooWah!

katrina etc

The big Debacle of oughty-five
Was not so much a hurricane
As the revelation of social schisms
Which, far from being on the wane
In America grow and thrive
Aided by any number of –isms

Conservatism’s in first place.
It’s got nothing to do with flags
Despite the way they don them,
Or family values, so to speak;
But has a bunch to do with race.
Or Trent Lott’s porch, in any case.

to roost

George bush’s chickens are home
Blown in on the winds of Katrina
Look close; he’s got the wild eye
Mission accomplished, by and by

Monday, September 12, 2005

Why does the GOP uck?

Why do conservatives suck?
It’s a thorny issue to ponder,
-- but allow your thoughts to wander.

Begin with massive SUV’s,
Bearing ribbons for soldiers overseas
--mostly from other families.

think of all the 9-11 muck they've raked
and all the schemes of war, half-baked.

contemplate the religious nuts
who, when they're not railing on peaceable gays
are calling for assassinations
adrift in their Oxycontin haze

Or consider Halliburton’s luck
At making another bloodstained buck.
What do they do? stick their straw in the ground
and with lips wrapped tight they suck, suck, suck.

If that doesn’t work there’s Rush,
Whose blurted views on New Orleans,
spewing out in a druggish gush,
paraphrase John Rocker on Queens.

Or Barbara Bush, who was struck
By the sight of all the evacuees, unwed mothers and pregnant teens
Who at Texas’ bosom will suck
--and noted their wonderful luck.

Oh happy day for such as they!
What, all they lost was a hovel.
no more need to scrabble
for food in the rubble.

Operation Hide the Bodies

Bush has arrived just in time
For a cover-up mission sublime
The goal of his administration,
Hiding corpses from press observation

The army has circled New Orleans
To keep photo-ops under wraps
Except to show crews at the levees,
Or Bush on the ranch in his chaps.

Meanwhile Cheney, just back from vacation
Is now on the scene to make certain
That New Orleans’ rehabilitation
Is contracted to Halliburton.

Of course there’s a role for Fox News;
Their job: shift the blame to the locals
Which Brit Hume is happy to do
When not stealing old ladies’ bifocals.

How do we know something’s wrong?
There’s one clue that should sound like a gong;
When asked if he’s troubled at night
Bush says “Why? What didn’t go right?”

republicans rebut charges of racism in Katrina response

Karen Hughes: "It's offensive to me to suggest that somehow, as I've seen some headlines and some reports do, that people, that Americans weren't helped because they are poor or because of their race. That is anti-American. That is not what our country is about… It is unfortunate that this natural disaster disproportionately affected people of one race and one income level." (NYT)

First Lady
: "I think all of those remarks are disgusting, to be perfectly frank, because of course President Bush cares about everyone in our country." (Yahoo news)

Rep. Richard Baker (R-LA)
of Baton Rouge, (Wall Street Journal): "We finally cleaned up public housing in New Orleans. We couldn't do it, but God did."

Rick Santorum: (R–PA)“…you have people who don't heed those warnings and then put people at risk as a result of not heeding those warnings. There may be a need to look at tougher penalties on those who decide to ride it out and understand that there are consequences to not leaving.” (TV somewhere)

Associated Press: 20% of Victims Had No Cars to Evacuate. “Two in 10 households in the disaster area had no car, compared with 1 in 10 in nationwide.” FromTheRoots

Jon Kyl (R-AZ): “the question is if people know year after year after year a natural disaster occurs in a particular place and people continue to build there and want to live there, should they bear the responsibility of buying insurance or should everyone else bear the responsibility?” (AZ Republic 9-4-05 - also found on FromtheRoots)

Mark Williams: .."they didn't have the necessary brains and common sense to get out of the way of a Cat 5 Hurricane and then when it hit them- stood on the side of the convention Center expiring while reporters were coming and going.." from Crooks and liars

And of course, Rush Limbaugh chimes in with a spot of racist wordplay...

Pew Research Center:
Seven-in-ten blacks (71%) say the disaster shows that racial inequality remains a major problem in the country; a majority of whites (56%) say this was not a particularly important lesson…as many as 70% of African Americans say they have felt angry, compared with 46% of whites… Blacks are twice as likely as whites to know people directly affected by the hurricane and are generally much more critical of the government’s response to the crisis…More than eight-in-ten blacks (85%) say Bush could have done more to get relief efforts going quickly, compared with 63% of whites.

…Oh, science... why do you tempt me with your logic…

Mr. Reiss, some rich guy in New Orleans: "Those who want to see this city rebuilt want to see it done in a completely different way: demographically, geographically and politically. I'm not just speaking for myself here. The way we've been living is not going to happen again, or we're out."(WSJ)

Don’t let the levee hit you in the ass on the way out, Mr. Reiss…

FEMA, you uck.

FEMA was issuing debit cards to evacuees, and has decided to stop, and instead give the remaining evacuees checks, if they provide an address.
(from Atrios)

O FEMA, perhaps it's now best,
if instead of just paining them more
you would let the evacuees rest
and just show yourselves out of the door

You used to be skillful and brave
until Bush fired all of your leaders
and replaced them with knave after knave
such as recently fired horse breeders

under Bush, sure, your job was a breeze
you just wrote checks to Dick's Halliburton
nothing to it, you thought, eating cheese
as Katrina was drawing the curtain

Now the dead drift down Union Street
and FEMA's concern is photographers
afraid that the sight of deceased
will influence George Bush's biographers.

Kyra Phillips' two cents on who's gotten hurt by Katrina

From Americablog:

: "I think it's unfair that FEMA is singled out. There are so many people responsible for what has happened in the state of Louisiana."

Kyra i dedicate this poem to you...

dear Kyra your interviews lack
any human compassion or feeling
were the evacuees White and not Black
your heart would begin uncongealing

But instead you've a twig up your ass
and attack when a question is raised
concerning the truthful besmirch
that George Bush's first thought was of Trent Lott's new porch

SOme things Poetry Can't handle

How the town of Gretna helps with the Hurricane evacuees, from, initially from this guy

"As we approached the bridge, armed Gretna sheriffs formed a line across the foot of the bridge. Before we were close enough to speak, they began firing their weapons over our heads. This sent the crowd fleeing in various directions. As the crowd scattered and dissipated, a few of us inched forward and managed to engage some of the sheriffs in conversation....

...We questioned why we couldn't cross the bridge anyway... They responded that the West Bank was not going to become New Orleans and there would be no Superdomes in their City. These were code words for if you are poor and black, you are not crossing the Mississippi River and you were not getting out of New Orleans."

In an interview with UPI, Gretna Police Chief Arthur Lawson confirmed that his department shut down the bridge to pedestrians: "If we had opened the bridge, our city would have looked like New Orleans does now: looted, burned and pillaged."

the lovable antics of Bush, Chertoff, and Brown

As Barbara Bush noted without hesitation,
The evacuee mood’s surely one of elation,
Given their government-funded vacation,
Quadrupling Texas’ Black population.

For Chertoff the whole situation was droll:
New Orleans, he noted, is under control.
Let’s give our thanks where they’re due
To Bushes and Roveses and Cheneyeses too.

The Department of Defense was magnificent
The levees received nothing more than a dent
Your average evacuee’s wearing a smile
With just minimal risk from the odd crocodile.

Meanwhile Brown plays it close to the vest,
And denies all reports of unrest -
If by unrest we mean there’s a riot.
That’s just silly—it’s wonderfully quiet!
The only noise now is the surf
Splashing over the Superdome turf.

What a wonderful thing is a government
That prizes the woefully incompetent.
Pay no heed to the gathering mob,
Brownie, you’re doing a heckuva job!

Katrina and Rove conspire to aid the Bush Image

Pudgy Rove twirls delicately on pink toes,
Orchestrating politicos
As graceful as a ballerina
Bush’s savior from Katrina

Not to aid the broken poor
That’s a long-shut, bolted door
Rove has other fish to fry
As New Orleans starts to die

With a gesture and a wave
Rove marshals up the brave,
The troops who never shy
From a governmental lie:

Chertoff skeletal and cold,
Cheney graying, growing old
Condi beaming as in twos
She dons three thousand dollar shoes

Brown the FEMA man—who’s he?
Just another Bush pally
Fired from his previous work
As a small-town lawyer clerk,
Now in charge of swift reaction
To any hurricane distraction

George W. Bush—a moral man
Observes destruction from above
Reluctant now to lose the tan
Acquired in the dusty glow
of Crawford Ranch, across the road
From son-less Cindy’s new abode

Now by the broken levee – George!
Equipment bustles, men with shovels,
Dozers, trucks and such devices
Ready now to save the hovels,
Just in time to halt the crisis.

Photo men point click and shoot,
George, by the dozer—that’s a beaut!

An hour later, Bush is gone
The levee repair—is it done?
Why, no—the men and trucks
Have left the levee to the ducks.
A temporary backdrop to a presidential photo-op.

"But perhaps the greatest disappointment stands at the breached 17th Street levee. Touring this critical site yesterday with the President, I saw what I believed to be a real and significant effort to get a handle on a major cause of this catastrophe. Flying over this critical spot again this morning, less than 24 hours later, it became apparent that yesterday we witnessed a hastily prepared stage set for a Presidential photo opportunity; and the desperately needed resources we saw were this morning reduced to a single, lonely piece of equipment. The good and decent people of southeast Louisiana and the Gulf Coast – black and white, rich and poor, young and old – deserve far better from their national government."

- Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA), remonstrating President Bush on Saturday for the use of a tragedy for a "presidential photo opportunity."

Trent Lott, planetary origin unknown, remarks on the job the government is doing in response to Katrina

September 3, 2005 - Senator Trent Lott: "I AM pleased with the federal government's response...this is not a time for complaining...I am really shocked at the comments that are coming.”

Trent Lott, what place do you call home?
are the prairies vast and red,
do three-legged creatures roam?
Does your alien anatomy explain
the useless mush you call a brain?

When you lie down in bed at the end of the day
does your wife ever turn to you and say,
honey, its time we grew some new Lotts
tomorrow let's purchase the planting pots?

Do you even know, now, when you utter a lie?
do your alien features gow crafty and sly?
Or are they like Play-Do - grayish and still
until you contort them however you will -
a smile or grimace, whatever will fly,
when you're thinking of how best to package your lie?
